Candidate Forums: Watch and Then Pick Carefully

By Randy Carter

Make no mistake about it: putting on the NWGHA Candidate's Forum is a lot of work, and there are times when it gets tempting to let some other Association do the heavy lifting. But ten minutes after the event begins, it all seems so worthwhile.

Here's a big salute to your Board members who booked the room at Nestle, made arrangements for the proper insurance coverage, came early and helped the video crew set up and stayed around to clean up, sent letters to all the candidates and followed up on the RSVPs. Congratulations on a job well done.

And while we're patting ourselves on the back, how about some thanks to the dues-paying NWGHA members whose modest treasury paid for the event.

The Forums for City Council and the School Board have been playing on Public Access Channel 25, and tapes have been made available to the Glendale Public Library. Board member Carol Brusha delivered the tapes barely 36 hours after the event, and library staff said some patrons had already been asking for them.

Where there was Will, we had a way

Due to the number of candidates in recent elections we have been fine tuning the format and have opted for a one-on-one interview with Glendale News Press columnist Will Rogers.
Rather than have each candidate answer the same question one after the other, it made more sense to let them sell themselves for a solid block of time. We thank Will for his spirited participation and interest in issues that effect our city.

Choose Carefully

Now comes the important part of the equation, selecting a candidate. A slim and tenuous majority on the Council prevented an obnoxious freeway sign and maintained the ordinance restricting fences from blighting the front setbacks of residential neighborhoods. Three seats are at stake in both the City Council and the School Board. Several of the candidates have been there when the NWGHA needed support, and they can probably expect to be repaid with our votes.

Several of the Candidates would certainly be a menace to navigation and hopefully will find other outlets for their energy. The informed voter makes it his or her duty to find out who understands the issues and will follow through when the votes are counted. April 3rd is Election Day. Be there!
